Veterans can access acupuncture services within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) through the following steps:
Authorization and Referral:
For a veteran to receive acupuncture services, there must be a direct authorization and referral. The process is patient-driven, meaning veterans seek care from the VHA and follow the necessary steps.
Coverage and Benefits:
Acupuncture is part of the VHA Whole Health System of Care. It is covered by the Veteran’s medical benefits package when clinically necessary, as determined by the patient’s care team.
Qualified Providers:
Licensed and Certified Acupuncturists provide care either at the VHA facility, or at neighborhood clinics that are credentialed to provide the service.
Safety and Effectiveness:
Acupuncture is safe when practiced by appropriately trained providers. Evidence suggests positive effects for pain conditions, mental health issues (depression, anxiety, PTSD), and wellness indicators (insomnia).
Training and Quality:
All VHA providers offering acupuncture services must meet training requirements based on their scope of practice. Battlefield Acupuncture is an auricular (ear) acupuncture protocol used for chronic or acute pain.
